Leading Hyperhidrosis Experts Speak at EADV in Paris
More than 100 physicians gathered to learn from their colleagues at the International Hyperhidrosis Society's session at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress in Paris on 17 September 2008.
Some of the foremost practitioners and researchers in the international community discussed the latest in hyperhidrosis treatment methods at the IHHS' session, "Effective and Efficient: The New Standard of Care for Hyperhidrosis."
The four-hour session on the opening morning helped kick off the five-day annual conference held at the prestigious Palais Des Congres conference and exhibit center. It brought together a multidisciplinary faculty of hyperhidrosis experts to share the latest research as well as their personal experiences and techniques.
"It was good to see the IHHS impartially representing all treatment modalities on the market and fairly expressing the pros and cons of each," noted Dr. Sandeep Cliff, one of the IHHS session speakers. "There were a lot of questions post-event and a lot of interesting points made concerning the talks. Clearly, the talks and the meeting was informative as well as thought-provoking."
With so many dermatologists and physicians unaware of how to treat and even diagnose hyperhidrosis, the strong attendance at IHHS' educational session was heartening, to say the least. Participants' interest in furthering their education about the condition also gives new hope to hyperhidrosis sufferers, particularly in the United States and the European Union, where dermatologists are usually the most informed about hyperhidrosis.
"The IHHS has been presenting sessions at the EADV since 2004 and it has been a wonderful experience. The IHHS works continuously to broaden its international scope and provide programs that educate physicians around the world," said IHHS Executive Director Lisa J. Pieretti. "This year, a physician traveled from Israel just to attend our session and keep up to date on the latest and most effective treatment methods. He told me his own methods have evolved as he previously used endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy to treat hyperhidrosis patients but now uses Botox injections."
Another attendee, Mexico City dermatologist, Rosa Maria Ponce, said she found the IHHS session both interesting and successful, well worth the trip to Paris.
Four of IHHS' stars in the field, who are among those leading the battle to educate physicians and patients alike, teamed up in the comprehensive four-hour session.
They were: Dr. David Pariser of Norfolk, Va., Secretary of the International Hyperhidrosis Society and president-elect of the American Academy of Dermatology; Dr. Dee Anna Glaser of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, who is the IHHS President and has published more than 75 articles in peer-reviewed journals; Dr. Cliff, a dermatologist and dermatological surgeon at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare and Epsom and St. Helier University Hospital NHS Trusts as well as honorary senior lecturer at London's St. George's Medical School; and Dr. Henning Hamm, senior physician and Assistant Medical Director of Dermatology at the University of Wurzburg in Germany.
The IHHS' presence at the EADV conference brought together a broad base of physicians to learn from each other, said Dr. Glaser. "This meeting is important because the condition of hyperhidrosis is really worldwide and the fact that we have physicians there from all over the world highlights that it's a global concern," said Dr. Glaser.
"We were pleased with the enthusiasm of the physicians who attended the session," she said.
Dr. Hamm commended IHHS' well-balanced program. "The IHHS session was an excellent opportunity for participants to inform themselves on the current diagnostics and all relevant therapeutic options in primary focal hyperhidrosis," said Dr. Hamm. "From my point of view, the significance of the meeting was that all important aspects of the condition were discussed in the light of actual medical knowledge."
The IHHS panel focused on a wide variety of hot topics and answered participants' questions. Dr. Hamm discussed how to define and diagnose primary and secondary hyperhidrosis, and how physicians can better understand hyperhidrosis' impact on patients' lives.
Dr. Pariser spoke on the emerging science and technology of topical therapies as well as the benefits of iontophoresis. Dr. Cliff discussed injections of botulinum toxin for axillary hyperhidrosis and presented video demonstrations of starch-iodine and axillary injections.
In addition, Dr. Glaser addressed injections of botulinum toxin for non-axillary hyperhidrosis and provided videos of non-axillary injections. She also talked about the latest techniques in axillary liposuction as well as when to use oral medications.
Dr. Hamm also discussed the use of endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. Finally, Dr. Cliff talked about incorporating office staff into hyperhidrosis patient treatment and management.
There's more to come in 2009. But the IHHS needs your help in 2009 to educate dermatologists, physicians, and patients next year to continue hosting multiple educational events. A panel of physician experts with experience treating hyperhidrosis by a variety of methods leads every IHHS program. These panel members consistently received the highest ratings on program evaluation forms.
But we can't continue our mission without funding and resources. IHHS needs your help to keep educating doctors and patients about hyperhidrosis and the best hyperhidrosis treatment methods available. IHHS is looking for corporate sponsors to continue its mission in 2009 and beyond. If you are interested in sponsoring an event, please email our Executive Director, Lisa J. Pieretti via LJP@SweatHelp.org.
Visit www.SweatHelp.org for the latest information about upcoming events, or send an e-mail to Info@SweatHelp.org to get on our priority event notification list.
If you attended the IHHS' EADV session, please send us your feedback or let us know what topics you would like us to cover in the future, where you would like us to bring a program, and who (if anyone) you'd like us to add to our faculty. We are always open to suggestions. Just e-mail us at Info@SweatHelp.org. Merci!
