North Carolina News & Observer: Happy holidays? No sweat

As the holidays gear up, it's time to address that scourge of the holidays: flop sweat.

Say what?

We didn't realize flop sweat was such a big deal, either. Until we got an alarming public service announcement from the International Hyperhidrosis Society.

Say what?

They're the people charged with keeping our armpits dry and our dry-cleaning bills low, with championing the medical breakthroughs that will one day keep excess moisture off our hands, our feet, our underarms and Lord knows where else excess moisture may collect. (Perhaps you've heard of their annual Run for the Roll-On 10K?)

But seriously. Most of us sweat when the boss tells a "joke" or pretends to be interested in how we're doing. However, for about 8 million Americans profuse sweating is a way of life.

So, you wonder, newly paranoid that you may be a latent carrier of the hyperhidrosis gene, how do I keep the sweat valve from sticking open during a potentially stressful event this holiday season?

* Apply antiperspirant. This may seem obvious, but did you know you should do it twice daily? Once after your morning shower and again before bedtime?
* Don't holiday shop during peak hours and avoid crowded, overheated stores. Meaning you should have wrapped up your shopping in October.
* Layer your clothing for easy removal while shopping or at a party.
* Steer clear of Betty in Accounting's Jalapeno Balls and other spicy foods at the office party.
* Sly tip: Hold a cocktail napkin with your drink to absorb the extra sweat on your palm -- takes the fear out of the handshaking process.
* Don't hesitate to excuse yourself from "uncomfortable conversations and stuffy crowds" to de-stress.

CIO and the International Hyperhidrosis Society (www.SweatHelp.org): Helping you get through the holidays swimmingly.
Or not.
