This fall, a London-based publication for dermatologists (Future Drugs Expert Review of Dermatology) contacted International Hyperhidrosis Society Board Member Dr. Dee Anna Glaser to write a detailed review of the CME event, “Hyperhidrosis: A Comprehensive and Practical Approach to Patient Management.” The report was published in the December 2006 Expert Review of Dermatology. It provides an excellent overview of the CME of interest to healthcare providers who were in attendance (as a review), healthcare providers interested in attending a future CME (who may want a preview), and hyperhidrosis sufferers who have wondered what happens at our programs.

Doctors have found a new way to utilize botulinum A neurotoxin, commonly referred to as Botox, besides smoothing old wrinkles: Combating excessive sweating.
Severe underarm sweating is a medical condition referred to as axillary hyperhidrosis. It involves an overactive nervous system sending too much stimulation to the sweat glands, causing patients to sweat up to four times more than average in order to maintain a normal body temperature. This causes additional perspiration in the face, palms, feet, and most notably, the underarms. There are nearly eight million people in the country who suffer from this condition.

FDA Report: Antiperspirant Awareness, It's Mostly No Sweat

The FDA defines antiperspirant as a drug product applied topically that reduces the production of sweat (perspiration) at the site where it is applied. Antiperspirants, according to the Food and Drug Administration, can safely and effectively reduce sweat for up to 24 hours, if formulated and tested properly. And for most, this means protection against both wetness and odor.
